Tips on Selecting the Correct Heat Exchanger Parts

What are the Details to be Checked to Select the Right Parts for a Heat Exchanger?

Shell and tube heat exchangers are the most common heat exchangers that are used and it is possible to fabricate them using different types of materials, both non-metallic as well as metallic. Moreover, these can be used in nearly every application related to process heat transfer.
Our aim here will be to examine various parts of these heat exchangers and the task they perform.

Tubing is generally welded or seamless, with welded tubing being more economical in comparison to seamless tubing. Moreover, tubing can also be finned for providing greater heat transfer surface.
Similarly, heat transfer can be improved by use of inserts like twisted tapes that are installed within tubes. Such installation of twisted tapes provides an improvement in heat transfer particularly when viscous fluids are handled in laminar flow conditions. Moreover, twisted tubes can also be utilized for enhancing heat transfer in specific applications.

Another of the Toronto heat exchanger parts, these are forgings or plates that are drilled for providing holes into which tubes can be inserted. The function of these tubesheets is to properly secure the tubes to make sure shell side fluid does not mix with tube side fluid. Additionally, there are 2 patterns in which holes can be drilled in a tubesheet; square or triangular. Let us look at where these two patterns are applied.
Triangular Pitch Pattern: This is the common type of pattern that is applied due to the fact that it offers greater heat transfer and in addition to it, provides compactness.
Square Pitch Pattern: The benefit of square pitch patterns is that they help in the mechanical cleaning of tube's outside perimeter.

There are three functions which are performed by baffles:
  • Provide support to tube
  • Ensure tube spacing is maintained
  • Provide direction to flow of fluid according to required pattern on shell side
There are baffles which serve the purpose of providing fluid flow paths which are different from cross flows. Additionally, such baffles are utilized when unusual design conditions are to be met. These baffles include:
  • Double and triple segmental
  • Helical baffle
  • ROD baffle
  • EM baffle

Tie Rods/Spacers

These are Toronto heat exchanger parts which are primarily utilized for 2 reasons:
  • For properly holding baffle assembly together
  • For maintaining required baffle spacing/pitch

Channels which are also known as heads are necessary for providing required flow path as well as for containing tube side fluid.
Any particular type of channel is chosen on the basis of an application for which it is to be used. As for instance, bonnet type channel is utilized in services where it is not necessary to remove the channel for cleaning or inspection on a frequent basis.

The Bottom Line

As we can see there are various parts in a heat exchanger that work in conjunction to improve the efficiency of a heat exchanger. Thus, by selecting the right type of parts you will be able to ensure that the heat exchanger performs as expected.
