Shell and tube heat exchangers are the most common heat exchangers that are used and it is possible to fabricate them using different types of materials, both non-metallic as well as metallic. Moreover, these can be used in nearly every application related to process heat transfer.

- Double and triple segmental
- Helical baffle
- ROD baffle
- EM baffle

- For properly holding baffle assembly together
- For maintaining required baffle spacing/pitch
Channels which are also known as heads are necessary for providing required flow path as well as for containing tube side fluid.
Any particular type of channel is chosen on the basis of an application for which it is to be used. As for instance, bonnet type channel is utilized in services where it is not necessary to remove the channel for cleaning or inspection on a frequent basis.
